We pride ourselves
on generosity
to servants. The woman
who washes up, suspected
of prostitution,
is not dismissed.
She always gets
a cup of tea
preserved for her
from the previous evening,
and a chapati, stale
but in good condition.
Once a year, an old
sari, and a blouse
for which we could
easily exchange a plate
or a cup and saucer.
Besides, she borrows
small coins for paan
or a sweet for her child.
She brings a smell with her
and leaves it behind her,
but we are used to it.
These people never learn.
Rather telling comment on how we treat our maids. Poets never will be gentlemen.
BTW.. I'm in love with the new Bloglines interface.
That seedy highway chai shop in Kattangal, scene of many mid-night debauches, has a thriving Orkut community. The mind boggles!
Fondly remembered items on the menu - Mik-cher (Mixture), Chaya ith elakkaya, noodles-single-attached and the man Vinuvettan himself. The most memorable thing on the menu was a heart-stopper that Venu eventually chalked down as Chicken Maggi Doggy Ishtyle. (Try saying that quickly in a thick North-Malyalee accent.) For the curious, that's a thick soup made with the contents of at least one packet of 2-minute Maggi noodles and one or more eggs.
Anyway, what does Venu serve now?

I could kill for a bowl of soup and a platter of deep-fried pork momos. As a matter of fact, I think I'll do that as soon as I log off. Shillong's junk food, Yum!
